Texila American University’s College of Medicine (TAU-COM) is committed not only to education but also to the health and safety of our students, faculty, and the Guyanese community. We are closely monitoring the global outbreak of COVID-19 updates. With the recent classification of a pandemic, with recommendations from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization (WHO), and as per the directives from the government of Guyana, the campuses of TAU have been closed. Our campuses will remain closed until April 3, 2020, as per the order of the government of Guyana.
The outbreak of Coronavirus has made things uncertain. Due to the uncertainty prevails everywhere, TAU has arranged for online classes as an alternative for students to continue their studies without any interruption. The lectures will be delivered online by TAU faculty for students enrolled in most of the basic science classes.
The TAU administration will continue to carefully monitor the situation and communicate any further changes as soon as we receive them.
Clinical rotations have also been suspended as per the guidance of AAMC, GPHC, and LCME issued on March 17, 2020:
“Effective immediately, calling for medical schools to pause all student clinical rotations until at least March 31, 2020. This pause will allow the medical education community, including learners, to develop appropriate educational strategies and alternative clinical experiences to best assure safe, meaningful clinical learning for students. It will also help with current concerns about the availability of personal protective equipment.”
As a result, TAU-COM has begun exploring alternative methods to help assist students in continuing their clinical training while being mindful of social distancing and preventing further spread of this crisis. The specifics of these alternative methods will evolve as the extent of the pandemic is better understood. The TAU administration is monitoring the situation and will communicate any further changes as soon as possible. Until such time, the clinical rotations are suspended.
If there is any update in the arrangements mentioned above, we will intimate you. The TAU administrative team will be available at any time to assist you if you have queries or other difficulties during these trying times.
Besides all, follow the coronavirus safety tips and WHO advice to keep you away from this pandemic. Stay safe!
