It is time to give back to the community where we thrive. Aimed at providing world-class medical services to Guyanese people, Texila American University, Guyana (TAU), plans are initiated to develop a hospital at Providence, on the East Bank of Demerara, with a 150-bed capacity.
In a recent press release, TAU’s Director for Recruitment and Public Relations, Mr. Sreebalakumar, revealed that plans are underway for the university to constructa hospital at its Providence campus.
The director further explained that the 120,000-square-feet university building at the Providence campus was constructed on five acres of land. Still, original campus plans did not utilize the entire area. The remaining land, which is just over half the original landmass, is now proposed to serve as the hospital’s foundational construction site.
The hospital will serve a dual purpose of fulfilling the medical training needs of the students who are part of the medical program and fulfill the Guyanese people’s healthcare needs.
The Chief Executive Officer of the University, Mr. Syam Kumar, added to the report stating that the university is in discussion with various leading healthcare service providers on building strategic partnerships to provide high-quality healthcare services and specialty care. An official announcement is expected to be declared in the coming months.
He further added that professionals will be working there and that the hospital’s development will not impact students’ rotations at other local hospitals.
He updated students’ status at the university and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. He explained that the transition to online classes was seamless as the university already had online learning in most of the courses, and the university had graduated 90 students recently.
TAU has made significant investments in Guyana to improve medical education, as highlighted by the university director, who recounted that the country has always been welcoming to investors.
“We invested in Guyana starting from 2010 when Guyana was not as interesting or popular in terms of its economic growth, and we believed in Guyana at that time,” he recalled.
He also emphasized,“we started to invest in Guyana, and now, we want to be part of Guyana’s growth also.”
He also highlighted the Georgetown Chambers of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), Guyana Office for Investment (GO-Invest), and the Private Sector Commission (PSC) as bodies that rendered valuable support to TAU in Guyana.
Finally, Mr. Syam Kumar stressed the primary goal behind initiating TAU back in 2010, admitting over 7,000 students to be an integral part of the Guyanese education system and identifying TAU as a Guyanese at large a Caribbean university for the local masses first.
