The Rotaract Club of Stabroek-Guyana, in association with Texila American University, conducted a Webinar titled “Let’s Talk Vaccines” on March 5th, 2021. The dean of the College of Medicine, Dr. Dheeraj Bansal, presented the webinar over Zoom. This partnership between TAU and the Rotaract Club of Stabroek was made possible by Alexandria Robinson and Shuyung Alexander, both students at TAU.
The webinar’s objectives were to raise awareness of the various types of COVID-19 vaccines and their differences, possible side effects, working, the importance of getting vaccinated against COVID-19, and the role that vaccination plays in preventing the spread of the disease.
Dr. Dheeraj Bansal educated the audience about the process of vaccinating and the types of vaccines available against SARS CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Viral vector vaccines and mRNA vaccines are some common types of COVID-19 vaccines. He proceeded to tell the audience about the process of developing a vaccine and how the immune response works to protect people against infections.
Dr. Bansal assured that all vaccines would be put through vaccine clinical trials and authorized for use only if they are safe and effective. He also spoke briefly about the various myths and resulting skepticism around COVID-19 vaccines. He then engaged in a question-and-answer session with the audience to help them get a clear idea about the vaccination process.
Vaccines have been studied and have been in existence for centuries. Vaccines have helped save millions of lives around the world. The role of vaccination in health care, disease control, and prevention cannot be stressed enough. In case of doubts about the vaccine, please consult your physician. You can also talk to people who have received the vaccine to learn about their experiences.
