Texila American University (TAU) Guyana is a leading Caribbean medical school that accepts international students. We are an excellent choice for students looking for accelerated options to jumpstart their global medical careers. Our diverse student body, faculty, and staff set us apart. Our students come from dozens of different countries, and our programs give them a competitive edge in the job market, no matter where they decide to practice medicine after graduation.
Accelerated Pathways to Medicine
Many international students enroll in our accelerated medical programs, including our direct entry MD program and our premed program for high school graduates. These immersive programs are designed to allow students to finish their degrees faster while developing the critical knowledge they need to succeed in healthcare. Here’s what you should know about these two popular, student-centered pathways to medicine:
Direct Entry MD Program – This is an attractive choice for global students who have Advanced Level Science credits and an IB diploma or who have graduated from the 10+2 system in India and Nepal. It’s also a great option for students with undergraduate degrees outside of the sciences from countries like the United States and Canada. TAU Guyana’s direct entry MD program, or 5-year MD Program, builds upon previous science education with coursework in essential subjects like physiology and anatomy before launching into more advanced classes and clinical rotations.
Here are more details about the timeline of our direct entry MD program:
- The first year of the direct entry, 5-year MD program at our Caribbean international medical school covers pre-med coursework.
- Years two and three focus on Basic Sciences, culminating in advanced classes in Pharmacology and Pathology. We offer our students early clinical exposure through preceptorships during the Basic Sciences portion of their degree plans.
- The final two years of the direct entry MD program consist of clinical rotations at our teaching hospitals in Guyana or the United States. These rotations offer exposure to critical areas such as Family Medicine, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry.
Pre-med Program for High School Graduates – Right out of high school, admitted students can begin their accelerated pre-med coursework consisting of three semesters of medical prerequisites. This coursework can be completed in just 18 months, after which students may enroll in our MD program or apply to MD programs elsewhere.
Our premed classes are designed to be the equivalent of those needed for admission to North American medical schools and esteemed schools around the world. Subjects include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, Statistics, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Medical Terminology, and Communication Skills. Premedical courses expose students to rigorous subject matter in the sciences and social sciences, honing their reading, writing, quantitative reasoning, and critical thinking abilities.
Diversity to Prepare You for a Global Career
Embracing diversity is one of the core values at our international medical school. Our medical students learn best when exposed to a broad spectrum of perspectives in a multicultural environment. A diverse student body allows students to build cultural awareness and prepare for top positions in a diverse workforce when they graduate. We also find that the more diverse the classroom or clinical setting, the greater potential there is for innovation. When our medical scholars learn from each other’s unique backgrounds, they raise the bar on their achievement potential.
TAU Guyana’s students and alumni come from 45 different countries, and we hope to expand our academic community to have an even wider global reach in the years to come. Our programs are accredited and recognized internationally. No matter where you want to practice medicine, we have you covered, and our name and wide alumni network open doors all over the map.

Graduates of TAU Guyana go far, and they value the education they received at our international medical school. Below are some testimonials from our global network of alums:
Dr. Fareeda Bacchus: “My experience with Texila American University has been an adventurous one. The campus is in such a serene environment, and the staff are such wonderful people. It is more about quality over quantity. I would recommend Texila American University, and if I had to do this journey all over again, I would choose Texila American University.”
Dr. Akhilesh: “It was the love of medicine that brings students here to Texila – it is this reason that international students of varying age groups study here.”
Dr. Abirami Saravanan: “It’s a complete hands-on clinical experience at TMC (Tuscon Medical Center). We have clinical exposure in multiple settings like inpatient, outpatient, and surgical centers. The attendings are very friendly, professional, and amazing to work with. All my attendings took time to teach me so many things.”
Dr. Sabarivasan Velsamy: “I took my clinical rotation at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) in Guyana. At GPHC, TAU’s Associate Professor doctors made me strong in my clinical basics, and I gained enough knowledge that helped me complete my medical degree and clear FMGE.”
Dr. Evannie Paula Edwards: “I started out in the premed program for the first semester, and we did very basic sciences like biology and physiology. After that, we moved over into the Doctor of Medicine program. That was really well-structured. Everything was done step by step so you could understand. It encourages you to try to put in work and make effort to learn because you know you have the faculty there to support you. I’m in clinical rotations now, and I’ve just completed Family Medicine. I’m about to start Radiology. This is where the books come alive.”
Dr. Esuru R Ikpe: “The hands-on mentors remarkably facilitated the study process and helped us gain confidence.”
Dr. Susrusha Dhas: “I was taught and trained by the most efficient faculty members in Texila, who were from different countries, and I’m forever grateful to them. I had the opportunity to do my clinical rotations in GPHC, the country’s largest hospital located in Georgetown. It was one of the best experiences of my life.”
Dr. Salma Ferouz: “When I was done with my clinical rotations in the U.S. and all my exams like the USMLE Step 1 and 2, I applied to residency, and I was able to match in Chicago, where I completed my residency. I will be starting a job as an outpatient attending in Chicago. I’m so happy with everything that happened with Texila. They saw my potential and were able to help me build that and grow that.”
Dr. Imran Shareef Syed: “All of the departments are very friendly and excited to accept each and every student. Please join Texila American University, and make yourself a proud doctor!”
