On Tuesday, October 15, 2024, Guyana’s Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, officially inaugurated the Texila American University (TAU) Study Center in Suddie, Essequibo Coast. This landmark initiative underscores the government’s commitment to expanding access to higher education, particularly in Region Two. The event, highlighted in a press release from the Ministry of Education, marks a significant step toward reducing educational inequities and creating opportunities for local communities.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including Minister Manickchand and Dr. Jacob Opadeyi, Director of the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL). Both speakers highlighted the transformative impact of the study center on local communities. Minister Manickchand emphasized the government’s dedication to ensuring equitable access to education for every Guyanese citizen. “This study center aligns with our mission of ensuring every student, regardless of where they live, has the tools and support necessary to pursue their educational dreams,” she said.
Dr. Opadeyi echoed these sentiments, highlighting the crucial role of the GOAL program in bridging educational gaps across the country. Since its inception in 2021, GOAL has empowered 2,703 residents from Essequibo to pursue Degree, Master’s, and PhD programs at no cost through the government-funded scholarship initiative. Approximately 220 of these students are currently enrolled at Texila American University, benefiting directly from this progressive scheme.
The newly commissioned study center offers modern facilities tailored to meet the academic needs of students pursuing higher education through GOAL. Equipped with advanced resources, it provides a dedicated space for learning, collaboration, and academic growth. The center not only facilitates academic excellence but also serves as a beacon of hope for students seeking to transform their lives and contribute to the development of their region.
This initiative is poised to make a lasting impact on the Essequibo Coast, fostering a more educated and skilled population. As part of its broader strategy, the government continues to invest in educational infrastructure, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for students in all regions of Guyana. The Texila American University Study Center stands as a testament to these efforts, symbolizing progress and empowerment for countless students.
With the government’s sustained commitment to education and initiatives like GOAL, this milestone is a significant stride toward building a more inclusive, equitable, and educated society in Guyana.
