Texila American University College of Medicine (TAUCOM) Guyana is one of the few accredited medical schools that accepts transfer applicants in the Caribbean. If you’re ready for a fresh start at a new medical school, you’ll love our streamlined admissions process. At TAUCOM Guyana, we offer a rigorous and rewarding academic experience in a dynamic setting. Many of our transfer students, especially those coming from the U.S. and Canada, find that we offer the individual attention from educators and change of pace they need to excel.
Transfer Eligibility
Students are eligible to migrate to our school from programs belonging to the World Directory of Medical Schools. We find our students have the best outcomes when they have some degree of exposure to our Basic sciences, pre-clinical coursework. Because of this, we only accept students prior to involvement in clinical rotations.
Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students
When you apply, you will need to provide the following:
- A completed application form and application fee
- Official transcripts from all previous post-secondary institutions
- Two letters of recommendation (At least one from an academic recommender)
- If applicable, any scores from USMLE attempts
- A 1,500-word or less personal statement detailing your background, experience, and motivation to change schools
- One color copy of your passport and two copies of color passport photos
Additional supplemental information may be required. Your application portal will specify anything else we need.
Advice for Letters of Recommendations
At least one of your recommenders should be an academic mentor, former teacher, or advisor. Be sure to choose references you’ve worked closely with and who can speak to your abilities and drive as a student in the medical field.
Advice for Personal Statement
Be yourself! Your personal statement is an opportunity for you to explain why you wish to transfer from your current institution. It’s also a chance to introduce yourself to our Admissions Committee. Your statement should highlight what’s unique about you and your individual background. It should also focus on what’s prepared you to overcome challenges and hit the ground running during the next phase of your medical education.
Admissions Process
After you submit your online application and upload all required documents, TAUCOM’s Admissions Committee will review your application. If qualified, you will be invited to an interview, and you will receive a final decision on your application shortly after the interview. Here’s what to expect during the process:
- Our Admissions Committee receives your application.
- The Admissions Committee reviews your application and supporting documents.
- We invite you to interview with faculty members and admissions representatives.
- You receive communication of a final decision regarding your admittance.
- Our Admissions and Academic Advising teams work with you to plan out your studies at TAUCOM Guyana.
Our Admissions Committee, which is made up of a mix of faculty members and student representatives chosen by Student Council members approaches the assessment of applications holistically.
We look at the whole person and honor their complex profile of strengths, talents, and potential. We celebrate diversity and differences in backgrounds, honoring different perspectives and lived experiences and taking those into consideration during our selection process. There is a substantial amount of transfer applicants Caribbean medical schools draw in each year, and we do our best to admit students whose academic profiles best align with TAUCOM Guyana.
Transferring Credits
Our Admissions team will evaluate your prior academic credits and determine which you can use towards satisfying our coursework requirements. Credit transfers are dependent on the equivalency of specific courses and adequate course performance. Typically, transfer students are not offered credit for incomplete courses or courses with grades D or below.
Please keep in mind that in some instances, transferring to a new MD program may extend the duration of your studies. TAUCOM Guyana does our best to minimize any delays or extensions, striving to give you fair and proper credit for your previous coursework. We aim to place you at an ideal point in our curriculum when you enroll, offering an easy transition and minimizing any potential challenges or hiccups.
Support for Transfer Students
During your application process, our Admissions team is available to assist you and answer any questions you may have. Admitted and enrolled students receive support from our academic advising, career services, and student wellness teams. We’re dedicated to providing you with resources to help you reach your goals during coursework and during your clinical rotations. As a student, you’ll also be able to take advantage of our substantial collection of digital resources, which includes Kaplan, LIRN, Springer, Lecturio, and Cyberpatient.
Financing Medical School
Tuition at TAUCOM Guyana is affordable in comparison to many alternatives in the U.S. and Canada. We also offer scholarships and financial aid to our students to help them offset costs. Scholarships are granted based on academic merit, career accomplishments, research contributions, cultural background, and other factors. Our Financial Aid Office can assist you as you explore all the various options to finance the costs of your medical education.
Support from Educators
Transfer students benefit from our small class sizes and low, 1:8 student-to-faculty ratio. Students coming from medical schools with much larger classes will notice what a significant difference this makes. TAUCOM Guyana’s professors provide students with individual attention and mentorship that dramatically enhances student performance.
Licensing Exam Preparation
USMLE prep is woven into our curriculum. TAU’s partnership with Kaplan Medical allows us to include USMLE review and preparation into our Basic Sciences coursework. Our students perform exceptionally well on licensing exams including USMLE, CAAMC, MCC, CAAMC, and FMG. The current USMLE Step 1 pass rate for our students is 94% and their USMLE Step 2 pass rate is 90%.
Clinical Opportunities
While completing our Basic Sciences requirements, you’ll benefit from preceptorship opportunities to shadow seasoned physicians and gain valuable hands-on experience. This is one of the many factors that makes us stand out among other medical schools that accept transfer students. Once you begin the Clinical portion of your studies, you gain critical experience at our US-based, ACGME-accredited hospitals in Arizona and at the Georgetown Public Hospital-affiliated, 600-bed teaching hospital in Guyana.
Outcomes for Transfer Students
TAUCOM Guyana boasts a 94% retention rate and high student satisfaction. Once you make the switch to our medical school, it’s more than likely that you’ll stay and finish your degree. Upon graduating from our MD program, our alums have an 80% residency placement rate at high-ranked, prestigious medical facilities in the U.S.
