Guyana was first colonized in 1616 by the Dutch when they established a trading post 25km upstream from Essequibo River’s mouth. The Dutch, in the year 1746, opened their colonies to British immigrants. British immigrants settled near the Demerara River. By 1760 the English population constituted the majority of Europeans of Demerara. The British took control over the internal affairs of the Dutch colony by 1786.
In 1812, Guyana’s capital was renamed Georgetown by the British. May 26, 1966, was set as Guyana’s Independence Day in a constitutional conference held in London. On February 23, 1970, Guyana became a cooperative republic and severed all its ties to the British monarchy.
On May 26, 2021, the staff of Texila American University celebrated Guyana’s 55th Independence anniversary at TAU’s Guyana campus fully masked and socially distant. The celebration included a program where the staff took part in poems recital, speeches, viewing Guyana’s National symbols, and cake cutting.
