Summary of the Workshop:
Texila American University, Guyana, successfully conducted a comprehensive hands-on Suturing Workshop on 13th June 2025 for students of the Transition Semester. The primary objective of the workshop was to strengthen students’ foundational clinical competencies, particularly in wound closure techniques—prior to their entry into clinical rotations.
The workshop commenced with an insightful opening address delivered by Dr. Dheeraj Bansal, Dean and Chief Academic Officer (CAO) of the College of Medicine (TAUCOM), who emphasized the significance of skill-based training and early clinical exposure in shaping competent and confident medical professionals.
The practical session was facilitated by an experienced medical team from West Demerara Regional Hospital, under the expert leadership of Dr. Cheman Ramdharry. His guidance, combined with real-time demonstrations, allowed students to effectively bridge theoretical knowledge with clinical application.
Throughout the workshop, participants were introduced to essential suturing techniques, including simple interrupted, continuous, and mattress sutures. They also received hands-on training in the proper handling and use of surgical instruments such as needle holders, forceps, and scissors, along with foundational education on wound assessment, aseptic techniques, and safety protocols.
The interactive nature of the session fostered an engaging learning environment, with personalized mentorship, immediate feedback, and ample opportunity for practice. Students were able to refine their skills in a simulated clinical setting, preparing them for real-world patient care scenarios.
This workshop reflects Texila American University’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence and practical training, equipping future medical professionals with the essential clinical skills needed to thrive in their careers.
Warm Regards,TAUCOM, Guyana.
