In a strong demonstration of community service and medical education in action, Texila American University (TAU) successfully organized a comprehensive medical outreach program in collaboration with the Laing Avenue Community Development Council (CDC) and the Ministry of Health. The event took place at St. Pius Primary School and served the residents of the Laing Avenue area and neighboring communities.
The outreach initiative brought together clinical students, faculty, and staff from TAU, who offered free general health check-ups including blood pressure monitoring, blood glucose testing, and basic health consultations. This hands-on experience not only provided vital medical services to underserved populations but also allowed students to apply their clinical skills in a real-world setting under professional supervision.
Simultaneously, Basic Science students from TAU took the lead in conducting
educational sessions aimed at increasing public awareness about health and hygiene, diabetes, and hypertension—conditions that continue to affect a significant portion of the local population. Using posters, handouts, and interactive discussions, students engaged community members on how to recognize symptoms, adopt healthy lifestyles, and seek timely medical assistance.
Adding further value to the outreach, the Ministry of Health distributed health vouchers to the attendees. These vouchers are intended to support follow-up care and encourage community members to access government health facilities for ongoing treatment and monitoring.
This initiative highlights the importance of academic institutions working hand-in-hand with government bodies and community organizations to promote public health and wellness. For TAU, it also reinforces the university’s commitment to experiential learning, social responsibility, and producing healthcare professionals who are not only skilled but also deeply rooted in community service.
Texila American University extends its sincere gratitude to the Laing Avenue CDC, the Ministry of Health, and all student and staff volunteers who made this outreach a meaningful success. The university looks forward to continuing such impactful programs that benefit both the community and the future healthcare leaders of Guyana and beyond.
